The Birmingham City Council has partnered with NFL FLAG Football, the Housing Authority Birmingham District (HABD), and the Birmingham Park Board for a youth flag football weekend at Legion Field beginning Friday, August 27th.

The weekend activities will start with an NFL FLAG In-Schools Day, where alongside the Atlanta Falcons and GenYouth, NFL FLAG will give away flag football kits to local Birmingham Physical Education teachers to bring the curriculum to their classes. Birmingham City Councilor Crystal Smitherman will be hosting the annual District 6 Job Fair on Friday, June 11 at the Memorial Park Recreation Center from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Her office has partnered with some of the areas largest employers who will be looking to fill positions. Companies like Coca-Cola, Buffalo Rock, the JCCEO, Golden Flake and more will be there with the goal of hiring new employees.

The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD) is gearing up for its Annual Summer Youth Program and is pleased to have the support of Birmingham City Councilor Steven Hoyt. During the city council meeting on Tuesday, Hoyt awarded HABD $15,000 in District 8 discretionary funds to go towards training activities and stipend payments for the participants of the summer program.

As a way to incentivize all residents to get a COVID-19 vaccine, Council President William Parker will be presenting a multipronged vaccine sweepstakes plan at Tuesday’s Council meeting.

The $13 million plan would be funded entirely through the $141 million Birmingham received from the American Rescue Plan Act.

President Parker’s plan includes a one-time $500 gift card or savings bond for 175,000 residents who have and will be vaccinated. This Saturday, Birmingham City Councilor Crystal Smitherman will be spearheading a box lunch giveaway in conjunction with a voter registration drive at the Cooper Green Park Recreation Center.
