Last week, the annual Alabama League of Municipalities convention was held in Birmingham, bringing hundreds of elected officials from all over the state to our city. Council President Wardine Alexander had the privilege of bringing greetings to the convention to kick off the week of discussions, information sharing and seminars.

“Birmingham, Alabama has changed a lot in my lifetime, not through the efforts of one person or group, but rather through an innumerable amount of small steps taken by the people who live here,” President Alexander told the crowd gathered at the BJCC. “Because of that commitment to building a more just and equitable future, nearly 60 years after the height of the Civil Rights Movement, our local government remains as an accurate reflection of the people who call this city home.”

The Alabama League of Municipalities (ALM) is a non-profit organization that serves as an advocate for the cities and towns in the state of Alabama, United States. Its primary mission is to promote the interests and enhance the capabilities of municipal governments in Alabama.

The ALM was established in 1935 and has since become a valuable resource for local governments. It represents the collective interests of more than 450 municipalities across the state, including cities, towns, and villages. The league is governed by an elected board of directors consisting of mayors and council members from various municipalities.

Last November, President Alexander was elected to serve as the Regional Director of NBC-LEO (National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials) with the National League of Municipalities.

“It is an honor to be able to represent Birmingham through an organization like the National League of Cities,” Alexander said. “My colleagues and I have been able to network with elected officials from all over the country and we’ve planned to implement some of the strategies we’ve discussed. I’ll be working with local legislators on ways to improve workforce development opportunities, holistic strategies to address issues surrounding homelessness and increasing broadband access for our students.”

Ebone Clifton, the South Regional Manager for the National League of Cities was in attendance for the conference last week and spoke highly of her experience in Birmingham.

“I enjoyed every moment of the conference, connected with some great people, and your wonderful hospitality made me feel welcomed and included throughout the event,” Clifton said. “We are stronger together, and that was evident during the conference. I know I’ve said this before, but it’s never been a better time to be a member of the National League of Cities; let’s work together to make the state of Alabama’s voices heard as we continue to make a difference on the issues that matter most to you. I truly appreciate your help and look forward to our continued work together!”
