Birmingham City Council reschedules meeting for Friday, April 3rd at 9:30 a.m.

The Birmingham City Council has cancelled the meeting scheduled for Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Birmingham Crossplex and has rescheduled the meeting for Friday, April 3rd at 9:30 a.m. at City Hall.

The offsite meeting was one of the quarterly evening meetings the Council had scheduled as a way to allow residents to have additional opportunities to attend. In light of the recent events, Council President William Parker has rescheduled that meeting in order to be in line with the City’s shelter-in-place ordinance that the Council passed last week.

One of the items that will be discussed on Friday will be extending the shelter-in-place order.

“We’ve been closely monitoring the public health crisis while we figure out the best path forward as city leaders,” Parker said. “This situation is constantly changing as it relates to industries and activities that are being impacted. The one thing that hasn’t changed is our commitment to keeping our residents safe. On Friday the Council will be discussing an extension of the shelter-in-place ordinance. It’s vital that we all adhere to the guidelines so that we can prevent our hospitals and healthcare facilities from being overburdened.”

Over the weekend, President Donald Trump extended federal social distancing guidelines through the end of April.

“This is not a decision we take lightly because we understand the impact it has on our small businesses in Birmingham,” Parker said. “But the sooner we can flatten the curve and prevent this virus from spreading in our communities, the sooner we can get businesses back open.”
