Birmingham City Council will meet Tuesday, President Parker invites Jefferson County Health Officials

The Birmingham City Council will be holding their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, March 17, at 9:30 a.m. on the third floor of City Hall. However, Council President William Parker is asking residents to follow the meeting remotely if possible.

As a precautionary measure, Parker is asking residents who choose to attend to be mindful and to practice the recommended “social distancing” techniques as advised by the Center for Disease Control.

These methods include, but are not limited to, regularly washing/disinfecting hands after touching door handles or other heavily used surfaces, not shaking hands, and keeping a six-foot distance from others if possible.

“We as a Council have the task to making sure Birmingham keeps moving forward, especially in times of uncertainty such as these,” Parker said. “Because of this, we will be holding our meeting to make sure the City’s business can continue uninterrupted for our citizens. We are asking that people who attend the meeting, if they so wish, to please refrain from shaking hands and sitting next to someone else, if possible.”

Council President William Parker has invited Dr. Wesley Willeford, Medical Director of Disease Control with the Jefferson County Department of Health, to discuss coronavirus prevention and answer questions at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. It will be the second time health officials have spoken about the virus at a Council meeting in as many weeks.

On Monday, Mayor Randall Woodfin declared a state of emergency in Birmingham and recommended that people refrain from social gatherings of 25 or more people. As always, the Birmingham City Council will be streaming the meeting live on our Facebook Page and it will be available on the City’s website.
