And here are a few of the main items the Birmingham City Council discussed at the January 7th, 2020 meeting:
Item 18 — Referred to Next Committee of the Whole Meeting
The Birmingham City Council voted to refer an Item that would amend the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham’s Franchise Agreement for the non-exclusive right to install, operate, and maintain a micro mobility system to the next Committee of the Whole Meeting. The amendment to this Ordinance would pave the way for an increase in micro mobility options for residents and visitors in Birmingham.

Items 19–34
The Birmingham City Council approved Resolutions determining that 16 buildings or structure are unsafe, a public nuisance, and directing that they be demolished.
In order to report a vacant property you would like to see demolished, you should call the City’s 311 hotline and report it. Here’s what happens after a property is reported:
Inspection of the property to determine if it poses a threat to public safety.
The City conducts a title search to find and contact the owner(s).
The City sends a letter to the owner(s), and gives them 30 days to make repairs.
If significant repairs are made, the City will grant a 30 day extension.
If there is no response, then the property is placed on the City Council agenda for demolition.

Item 43
On Tuesday, the Birmingham City Council voted to set a public hearing for a rezoning case in Woodlawn that will open the door for new residential development.
The South Woodlawn Neighborhood Association met at its regularly scheduled meeting on October 5th, 2019, to review the proposed project and voted to recommend approval of the proposed rezoning request. The vote was 7 approved and 0 denied.
Councilor Steven Hoyt, who chairs the Planning and Zoning Committee, said that he’s excited to see developers investing in Woodlawn. “I think it’s a great opportunity for us to revitalize our city,” Hoyt said. “I think we need to try and continue to duplicate this in all our communities.”
The public hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 4th at the Birmingham City Council meeting.
