Here are a few of the main items the Birmingham City Council voted on at the October 15th 2019 Meeting:
Item 1
The Birmingham City Council approved a rezoning case that will allow for the development of housing especially designed for graduate-level UAB students at the site of the decommissioned Wells Fargo Bank drive-through off 18th Street South.
Item 3
The Birmingham City Council approved an ordinance establishing a smoke-free Health District that encompasses the densely-used hospitals and health centers on Birmingham’s Southside including Children’s of Alabama, Cooper Green Mercy Health Services, Jefferson County Department of Health, Southern Research, University of Alabama at Birmingham and UAB Medicine, and Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Smoking on public rights of way will be prohibited within the newly-established district boundaries. Anyone who violates the parameters set forth in the ordinance could be subject to a fine. These new changes will go into effect on December 1, 2019.
Item 4
The Birmingham City Council denied an appeal from Morningstar Storage to construct a self-storage facility at 1905 Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard South, a property that sits across from Vulcan Park and Museum along a key entry point into the city.
Item 23
The Birmingham City Council approved an Agreement for Birmingham Promise, Inc, a new non-profit organization established by the United Way of Central Alabama, to administer the Birmingham Promise Initiative. Birmingham Promise, Inc will will receive $2 million from the City of Birmingham every year for five years. The Birmingham Promise Initiative creates post-secondary opportunities and apprenticeships for Birmingham City School students.
