Here are a few of the main items the Birmingham City Council approved at the December 30th, 2019 Meeting
Item 10 — Delayed Two Weeks
In order to get additional input from members of the Five Points West Community, the Birmingham City Council voted to delay this item for two weeks. The item is a proposed Agreement with the 5 Points West/Crossplex Business Alliance for their Building Opportunities for Lasting Development, or BOLD funding for several initiatives to increase economic and community vibrancy. The 5 Points West/Crossplex Business Alliance, Inc. would receive $26,500 for a term of one year, and would:
- Build organizational capacity by joining with Main Street Alabama and other groups to create engagement and investment in the community and establish a business office for meetings and training
- Oversee business design projects to include five mural and five façade improvements and improve small business owner signage in the commercial business district
- Increase economic vitality by developing a training and resource program that supports educational needs of the business community as well as talent and recruitment programs for new entrepreneurs and well-established businesses
- Collect data regarding all businesses and commercial properties in the 5 Points West Commercial Corridor.
Item 13
The Birmingham City Council approved a Resolution authorizing the Mayor to execute an Agreement with the Birmingham Regional Paratransit Consortium, (ClasTran). ClasTran will receive $250,000 a year for two years under this Agreement.
ClasTran is a nonprofit (501-C-3) corporation formed in June of 1997 to coordinate specialized transportation (paratransit) services in Jefferson County, Alabama and Shelby County, Alabama
The ClasTran Board of Directors is made up of representatives from the Jefferson County Commission, the Shelby County Commission, the Jefferson County Mayor’s Association, Birmingham Mayor’s Office, the City of Jasper, Social Service Agencies, the United Way, and one consumer.
ClasTran’s primary funding sources are from FTA Section 5310 (Elderly and Disabled) and FTA Section 5311 (General Public Rural) grant funding. These grants require a local match that is provided primarily by the Jefferson County Commission, the Shelby County Commission, Walker County Commission, the City of Jasper, Walker Area Community Foundation, the City of Birmingham and other Jefferson and Shelby County Municipalities.

The Birmingham City Council approved 2021 World Games Master Venue Agreement. The venues that are part of this Agreement are:

This Agreement is a major step in the City’s progress toward creating a spectacular international sporting event in 2021.

The Birmingham City Council approved Resolutions to set a public hearing for January 28th, 2020 (during the regularly scheduled City Council meeting) to consider rezoning 6 properties to allow for the development of Northside Park, a mixed-used residential and retail project located in and around the former Carraway Hospital Campus in Druid Hills. The properties considered for rezoning are:
