City Council Meeting Recap 3.10.20
Here’s the video from the meeting:
And here are a few of the main items the Birmingham City Council discussed at the March 10th, 2020 meeting:
Items 1 and 2
After a two week delay in order for the new owners to get more input from the neighborhood association, the Birmingham City Council voted to approve for the transfers of an Off Premise Beer and Wine License, and a Lounge Retail Liquor Class II License for Save Mart, located at 4000 Jefferson Avenue S.W. Suite A.
Items 8, 9, and 10 — Delayed One Week
In order to get more information on the tree in question, the Birmingham City Council delayed three items, all dealing with the same matter, for one week.
The items would permit Lamar advertising to raise the sign frame of their billboard behind the Boutwell Auditorium, and to cut down a tree located at 1801 17th Street North, that is obstructing the view of the billboard. There would be no cost to the City as a result of this work.
Addendum Item 56
On Tuesday, the City Council approved over half of the $12.6 million year-end budget surplus to go toward various projects such as the Carver Theatre renovations and repairs for the Sixth Avenue South viaduct.
In all, four items were approved, with the remaining being sent back to committee for further discussion. In addition to the aforementioned projects, the Council also approved $2.7 million for cost of living adjustments for city employees and $2.6 million to expand the Eastern Area Landfill.
Flooding across the Sixth Avenue has been a serious issue with residents for some time. The $1.2 million in funding that was approved will go towards remediating those flooding issues.
“This is something I, along with our residents, have been very vocal about for years,” Councilor Crystal Smitherman said. “I’m glad that the surplus money in our budget can be used to fix an issue like this, one that impacts nearly every single person who lives on this side of town.”
The remaining issues that were bundled with the surplus spending projects include, money for city vehicles, computer software and park improvements. Those items will be discussed at the next Committee of the Whole meeting.
