On Monday, District 6 Councilor Crystal Smitherman spent the day delivering care packages full of essential, hard to find items to families — while being careful to abide by the health department’s guidelines.

Here is the video from today’s meeting:

Here are a few of the main items the Birmingham City Council passed at the April 21st, 2020 Meeting

Item 1

The Birmingham City Council approved an Ordinance which allows the City to sell City-owned property to Build Urban Prosperity (Build Up). The property is located at 527 5th Street North, and will be sold for the fair market value purchase price of $4,100. Build Up will use this property to develop an affordable detached single-family residence.

Build Up is the nation’s first and only workforce development model that provides low-income youth career-ready skills through paid apprenticeships with industry-aligned secondary and early-postsecondary academic coursework. Watch the video below for a profile of Build Up, which began its operations in Ensley in 2018.

The Birmingham City Council has been an early and regular supporter of Build Up.

Item 5

The Birmingham City Council approved a 6-month, $50,000 Agreement with the Red Mountain Theatre Company (RMTC)

Under this Agreement, the RMTC will:

Provide affordable and discounted programs to Birmingham City School students. The RMTC anticipates serving about 13,000 students.

Provide free community nights for each show during the production seasons.

Provide free performances and training from their “Seasoned Performers” group to senior citizens in Birmingham. The Seasoned Performers celebrate the contributions of older adults by producing both original and well-known material, providing performance opportunities for seniors, and bringing live theater to special and often underserved audiences.

Item 12

As certain City facilities like City Hall continue to remain open to the public in order to perform essential services to the citizens of Birmingham, the Birmingham City Council approved a payment of up to $20,000 for cleaning & disinfectant supplies. The City of Birmingham Public Works Department has been regularly and thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting City facilities on a daily basis in order to stop the spread of COVID-19.
