Council President William Parker has been in close contact with local officials about the possibility of opening Legion Field as a testing site.

The goal is to have a drive-thru testing site for residents that is within the city limits of Birmingham. Health experts have said that having adequate access to tests is vital to preventing the spread of COVID-19. Currently there are only a few sites available in Jefferson County.

President Parker believes that Legion Field would be an ideal spot for a testing site in Birmingham. “Legion Field sits on 100 acres with an ample amount of flat parking area which could handle the amount of traffic other sites have seen,” Parker said. “Legion Field can accommodate thousands of vehicles and people as we’ve seen with major events over the years. There is ample room for cars to maneuver in order to maximize the number of tests.”

Parker is continuing to have conversations with local officials and health experts about Legion Field as a potential testing site. “We want to make sure everyone who needs a test will be able to have access to one,” Parker said. “It’s very important we act quickly and decisively about a potential location.”
