Council President Parker seeks meeting with Senator Shelby and
Congressional Leaders to secure stimulus money for Birmingham
Following an announcement that the Trump administration is asking Congress to approve an $850 billion economic stimulus package to combat the effects of coronavirus on the economy, Council President William Parker is seeking a meeting with Alabama’s Congressional delegation.
This includes, Rep. Terri Sewell, Rep. Gary Palmer, Sen. Doug Jones and Sen. Richard Shelby. The goal, Parker said, is to take a targeted approach in order to secure as much funding as possible for Birmingham in order to offset potential economic hardships, especially for small business owners.
“This is an unprecedented time for all of us,” Parker said on Tuesday. “As city leaders we have to exhaust all our options to make sure we’re taking care of all our residents. Small business owners are facing uncertain times right now and we want to do all we can to help. We’re seeking meetings with our Congressional leaders so we can be on the same page when it comes to securing as much federal funding as possible.”
The details of the stimulus package are expected to be released later today.
Parker is seeking a briefing from Congressional leaders as early as this week. “We have to get out in front of this and that means we need to act swiftly,” Parker said. “It’s going to take all of us working together over the next several weeks. I’m confident that we can work with our Congressional leadership to secure these funds and inject that into our local economy.”
