President Pro Tem Smitherman issues statement on recent gun violence
“We strongly condemn the violent shootings that have taken place lately, particularly the disturbing rise in youth violence.
Every life lost to such senseless acts is a tragedy, leaving families shattered and communities devastated. Last week, there was a shooting near Railroad Park, and while no one was killed, it’s deeply disturbing nonetheless.
It is crucial that we come together as a society to address the root causes of this violence by providing comprehensive support and resources to our young people.
By fostering education, mentorship, and creating safe environments, we can strive towards a future for our youth who feel as though their only option is to turn to violence as a way to resolve their issues. In doing so, they often forfeit their opportunities for success in the future because they either lose their life or spend it in prison.
The Council is currently in the process of passing the FY 2024 Budget and investing in our youth is at the forefront of our priorities. That includes, but is not limited to:
• Safe Havens: $500,000 (expansion)
• Birmingham Promise: $2 million
• Birmingham City Schools Mental Health Support: $1 million
• Financial Freedom financial literacy program: $1 million
• RESTORE juvenile re-entry: $225,000
• DYS Kids and Jobs: $210,000
Together, we must invest in the well-being and future of our youth, ensuring a brighter and safer tomorrow for everyone.”
