The 36th Street bridge in Wylam is now undergoing repairs and is estimated to be closed until June 2020.

The City is working to correct the settling of the bridge approaches on both sides, repair slope paving under the bridge and repair damaged beams under the bridge deck. These issues have created a rough ride for motorists and unsafe conditions.

District 9 Councilor John Hilliard has been advocating for infrastructure improvements in the area since stepping into office. “This is about public safety,” Hilliard said. “My main focus has been improving the quality of life for all our residents in District 9. This bridge is something that residents have brought up consistently when I talk to them about issues in the community. I’m very happy to see this project moving forward.”

The end slabs on both sides of the bridge will be completely demolished and rebuilt. Below is a map of the suggested detour routes:

For additional information on the closure, please contact Councilor John Hilliard’s office at 205–254–2302.
